dash that cam

For my birthday I bought myself a dashcam ... it was at about the same time I decided I'd also get a new car so I put off installing ... one thing led to another ... anyhow ... Yesterday I got my self in gear and did the deed. It was actually a doddle ... I used an old toothbrush and a bent teaspoon to do the deed ...

The cam is a little dinky unit that fits easily into my hand. This model comes with an adhesive "shoe" that houses the GPS and power. A bit of bluetack let me work out the best position ...
I made an extra "breakaway" mount to make getting it off the windscreen a little easier. and after a bit of a cleanup with Isopropyl alcohol It's firmly tucked completely out of sight behind the interior mirror.

The power is supplied by a 2.5 meter cable that plugs into the ciggy lighter ... I used the toothbrush handle and the spoon to persuade the headlining away from the windscreen and to was able to tuck the cable out of sight along the crack, then down the side of the rubber seal on the door pillar, under the glovebox trim and into the centre console. Only 2" of cable showing - the rest is hidden in the trim. I was quite pleased ... It shouldn't fall out but will be easy enough to get out without leaving marks when I change the car.

The unit switches on with the car and records your journey in 5 minute "chunks" each of which are 377.5Mb. plus about 20Kb of GPS info.
I installed a 16Gb sdhc card and it just continues recording in a never ending loop Once the card is full the oldest recordings are deleted.

To my way of thinking if you had an accident ... you're only bothered about the last 5 minutes of the journey ... even so, being cautious 16Gb gives 3 hours recording.

So out we set and only a few minutes into the journey we could see blue lights in the distance and 5 cars flashed by (the front one being chased) ... also a heli in the sky.

It was pretty unexciting - I just pulled in to give them space ... but if there had been any drama .... I had it all on camera.
It's obviously early to be recommending anything ... but here's a screenshot of the chase - you can see the info that's available if there had been an accident and insurance or statements had been required.

I can see some obvious advantages to having one - I think it's probably something I'll be adding to my cars from now on ...

I think it would be a useful article maybe for WU to run some reviews ... the choice is massive and there must be a similar spread of quality (both output and build). Priced from £15 - whatever you'll pay.
