I have always believed it to be best to have an AV installed on all my Android devices. I know that AV itself is of little use due to the way Android is designed but most incorporate a host of other features as well like file/app scanners, email scanners etc. So I have always had Avast as I use it on the laptop.
However recently my Nexus 7 started to slow down, crash more often and generally be a right pain in the foot. I know Avast has an app scanner built in so I wondered if this was what was causing the problem - apps always being scanned so slowing things down. I thought of the PC at work which has Kaspersky installed and whenever it does a scan first thing in the morning it brings the PC to its knees, sometimes making it unusable. So I decided to uninstall Avast and see what happened.
Now apps open more quickly, download the latest news more quickly and generally feel much more responsive. Google, and others, say you do not need an AV installed and quite frankly I am now coming round to this way of thinking as well. Avast is a good AV but it just seemed to reduce the performance of the tablet .
My big concern though is with surfing the net. I know downloading apps from the Google Play Store is safe enough but is it still safe to surf the net without AV installed? Is an AV needed to keep you safe doing this on Android or is it OK to go ahead and not bother with one? I don`t really want to install one as the tablet is working fine now but if it`s needed then I will.
Does anyone know what the best thing to do is? I would appreciate some advice on this.
