(Not sure if this should be in hints and tips but plumped for here because most W10 users hang out here.)
One or two of the programs (Apps) in W10 don't seem to want you to create a desktop shortcut icon. You can stick a shortcut in the task tray or one in the start menu but not it seems on the desktop.
For me an over loaded task try is not ideal anymore than an overloaded start menu is and besides that I just find it more convenient to have a main set of my shortcut icons on the desktop.
Edge in particular I found annoying, but eventually did find a way but I had to use a generic icon for the shortcut to Edge and after a while my third party shortcuts increased and not having a proper Edge icon started to irritate as it sometimes took a second look to find it.
I began to consider making my own icon for edge so started looking for a suitable Edge icon candidate and in so doing discovered the following.
Press the Windows key and R together and type in the run dialogue box 'shell:AppsFolder', which will take you directly to the applications folder.
In Applications you will see all your Apps listed. Most will have icons by them but some will not.
On my machine Edge is listed but there is no icon by the listing. I ignored that and right clicked on the 'Micrsoft Edge' entry. Then from the pop up select create shortcut. You will get the message that a short cut cannot be created here and would you like to send it to the desktop, (just like in W7:D). . Click Yes and you will have the proper Edge icon shortcut on your desktop.
This of course works with all the other Apps as well.

One of the things I find a tad frustrating
