Every Kindle has a dictionary installed, and when reading a book you can access a definition by clicking, and holding, onto the text. However, if you need to check a word, not necessary in your books, the dictionary may be at the end your collection. Quick access can be obtained as follows. Use the search tool and type in the word you are interested in. The result will show any instance of the word in your books. Then click on "search anywhere". This will give you a direct link to the word in the dictionary. As a bonus if on-line, access to the word on Wikipedia.
I used this to look up a word I saw in a DVD review, it saved me going to my bookshelf to get a dictionary.
