I have inherited an elderly laptop which was dead. I tried for voltage on the lead and there was none, so I bought a new one. This was exactly the same, so I tried the lead from my HP laptop and this worked OK. I installed Ubunto as the previous owner had lost the disc for reinstalling and everything is OK. However, it had a warning come up saying battery not present. This vanished after a while but it will not run on battery and there is no sign of it charging, which I suspect might be because I am using the wrong lead. I don't know if a dead battery could cause the first problem of not starting up, or if I am on the wrong track altogether, any suggest welcome. I don't want to buy a new battery if it is unnecessary.
