I was answering a query on another post - and an idea came to me.
The old chestnut about the Win10 license... it clearly states that you are entitled to use EITHER your original version of windows 7/8.1 OR win10.
That clearly means you can't (shouldn't) install to another machine ... where you could have them running at the same time.
What about Dual booting on the SAME machine though?
My new laptop has 2 HDDs ... a 256Mb SSD (now win10) and a 1Tb Hybrid.
It was born with a Retail ver of Win7 (because I'm a gamer).
To be part of the "in crowd" though I wanted to upgrade ... so that's what I did I converted that version (A) to Win 10.
It was important for me to hang on to 7 though (for games) so I also installed my other retail copy of 7 (B) to my mechanical HDD.
Today as I typed - it dawned on me that if you dual boot ... you can by definition only ever use 1 copy of the operating system.
So I started reading through the license ... it's never going to make the best seller list!!
Anyway Win 10 can only be installed on a machine once ... the serial is associated with the machine identifier and you can only register a machine once... so the T&Cs on usage state that you can't even run a copy in a VM (not true - but that's what it says).
But Windows 7 doesn't work like that (I don't have 8 - so haven't looked at that option - win 8 "tattoos" a UEFI bios though ... so it might cause a problem).
The License KEY is what's validated ... (The best I can find) the machine identifier isn't used.
Anyhow - I thought I'd have a go - so I've changed the 7 licence key (the 5x5 disk key). from B back to the original A.
Win 7 paused as it detected the change ... flashed up "this is an unlicensed copy" appeared bottom right as it deleted the old entries .... my heart sank.
The screen went blank .... and then the desktop appeared without wallpaper ... oh dear oh dear! ... "this is an unlicensed copy!!"
I rebooted the machine ... ready to revert back to key B and ..... no message bottom right
I checked the properties ....
It activated!! ... I reloaded my wallpaper ... rebooted into 10 , then 7 , then into linux ... now back in 7 and it's still activated.
It's just possible that the check only runs once a day ... and that it may fail tomorrow ... but I think not.
At this point I have to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong ...
It looks like you CAN reuse your Win7 license key on the same machine and have it dual boot with the upgraded windows 10.
This gets better every day :D ... anyone fancy trying it on win 8?
