GADGETS !!!! D
I do like a good gadget - anything from a good sharp penknife - to my latest acquisition - a laser measurier (no - not Sgt. Arthur Wilson in dad's army!)
After a post here Mikec1 included a link to measuring devices ... I followed it - let's just say it arrived yesterday.
It's reasonably nifty ... but there are some reservations.
It's not accurate! ... according to the book there is a calibration function ... but the book is in chinglish ... so give me a couple of days on that ...
It also BEEPs loudly and constantly - every key you touch causes a BEEP, every measurement causes a BEEP! ... it makes sitting fiddling while Mrs I does the crossword just turns into Mrs I having a cross word (or two) with me!!!
Measurements can be done from the front, middle or back of the device ... and from the front ... it's absolutely spot on ... so I'm guessing that the original device was 1.12cm shorter that the new (improved) v1.1
It also does Pythagorean measurements, area and volume calculations ... they are spot on if done from the front according to my tape measurier and calculator.
The other limitation isn't obvious at first - it's me!...
I've measured the rooms, measured the garden ... but when I came to measure the drive ... it has a slight, very gentle slope upwards (for drainage)
I was taught to measure twice and cut once ... generally though I'm measuring quite short distances ... I can pace up a drive and work out how many bricks ... but with this gizmo ... I could ... and indeed now, I EXPECT to measurier to an accuracy of 1.5mm per 40m.
From here to there give or take a couple of bricks isn't good enough any longer.
To further complicate laying a tape ... or running a wheel you'll get a slightly different measurement to using the laser. Do you follow the hypotoneuse ... or the adjacent? ... surface distance or straight line?
Another horse another colour ... either way - if you've only got a 10Ft rule ... the 40M will be more accurate.... but the job will be a bit easier.... the jury's out on this one ...

Not technically hardware ... not really OF stuff either.
