HP Scanjet 4850 software for 8.1

Can anyone please HELP , my HP Scanjet 4850 is NOT supported any longer for Windows 8.1 by the makers ?? Do I have to pay Vuescan £40 for a solution , I need to use the Neg/Pos slide fuction .
