It is well documented that 'The Icon' Sting nearly signed with WWE back in 2001 when they purchased WCW. The reason he didn't was because there was a feeling that WWE would bury him and ruin his legacy.
Sting has come close to signing for WWE on a few occasions, and it finally looks like he will at some point turn up in a WWE ring. It pisses me off that he is AGAIN talking about facing Undertaker. Sadly this match looks too late in the day and Sting has had plenty of opportunities to make this happen. Most recently being 2011 at Wrestlemania 27 - everything was set in stone with the promos leading up to Takers match and instead we got Triple H, albeit a great match.
Some members of the IWC think staying away from WWE was a smart career move as Vince loves nothing more than burying WCW talent. I really don't know where this notion comes from. Lots of WCW stars have made the cross over to WWE and had success. Notice I said 'stars'? Yes, we have seen absolute disasters cross over and job out but were they relevant anyway?
PRE INVASION
Off the top of my head, Big Show, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit were 4 wrestlers who made the jump. All 4 were given the title, all 4 were given great storylines and all 4 were made into Main Eventers.
POST INVASION
Booker T
One of the biggest names to make the jump during the Invasion. Thrown straight into a feud with Austin, then thrown into another with The Rock. WWE even gave him the belt to carry.
DDP
While he never made it to the Main Event, DDP had a pretty decent feud with The Undertaker and was also given mid card titles. Lets be honest, WWE gave DDP as much as he was worth.
Kevin Nash
A solid Main Eventer in WCW and a solid Main Eventer in WWE during 2003. Quad injuries derailed him but he was in the title picture with Triple H which was a decent feud. He only had his contract was not renewed because of his injuries.
Ric Flair
WWE have honoured Ric Flair from the get go ever since he returned to the company in 2002. He has main evented, had some great feuds and being invo0lved in some major storylines. He got the perfect send off at Wrestlemania 24 and even this past week was honoured again.
Scott Steiner
After a brief feud with Matt Hardy, Steiner got a title shot against Triple H. Like others, WWE gave him a chance but the crowd were just not into him. He floated around mid card, got injured then released. Maybe WWE could have tried harder.
Rey Mysterio
WWE love Rey and have stuck by him despite all his injuries. They have made him into a star. He won the Rumble, has held the Title and has never been made to look weak despite his size. Mysterio has main evented which he never did in WCW.
Goldberg
The only person to blame for his 2003-2004 run is Goldberg himself. He simply did not get over and in my opinion, WWE gave him the ball which he couldn't carry. Lets look at the facts, his debut he destroys The Rock, his PPV debut he beats The Rock who was just off the back off wins against Hogan and Austin. He then went over Jericho in a couple of PPV's before he was elevated into the Main Event against Triple H. He got the belt, he carried the belt and was never made to look weak in defeat when he lost the belt at Armageddon. He then entered a feud with Lesnar, who he went over in his last match at Wrestlemania.
So like I said earlier, I am not sure why Sting was worried all those years ago. Sting was a star of WCW and by my reckoning, WWE always did ok by the top WCW talent.
