There's some good news there for red squirrels too. In the BBC Earth article, it says

However, recent research from Ireland suggests that pine martens are more likely to prey on grey squirrels than red squirrels; possibly because greys are larger, heavier and spend more time on the ground making them easier to catch than reds. But it seems clear that in areas where pine martens are doing well, red squirrels are increasing and grey squirrels are decreasing in number.
