My opinion about the Nasa new discovery

These days the world has got a "new important discovery".

In Mars exists water. This means that there are likely life forms. Very very important for the science and our knowledge.

What I want to ask, and someone will be against my thought is this:

Before spending billions of dollars for discover water on Mars it would not been better to help to find clean water in many place in the world where children die every day for its missing?

Time to retire Truecrypt

Some 16 months after the developers stopped supporting Truecrypt, the first real security hole has been discovered.

According to a post at http://ift.tt/1hbtuqU a Google security researcher has unearthed two bugs that could pose a potential security threat to PC's on which it's installed.

What isn't made abundantly clear in the article is that the problem lies in the Kernel driver that TC uses to interface with the OS, when using whole disk encryption, to create a Privilege Escalation, this can give someone a back door in to the PC to run exploit programs. The actual encryption components of TrueCrypt remain as solid as ever.

If you are using Truecrypt in 'Container' mode then it's believed that you are still safe, only those utilising full disk encryption are vulnerable.

As this bug is in the Kernel driver it also affects all the 'forks' of TrueCrypt that popped up after the original authors ceased support for the project.

Currently the only one of those forked projects to fix these two bugs is VeraCrypt, and is currently being recommended by security experts as a replacement for TrueCrypt.

Replacement Motherboard

In the light of the issues I have been having, I want to explore the options if I have to replace my Motherboard.

Current Spec is:
Processor = AMD Phenom(tm) IIX6 1055T Processor 2.8 GHz
Memory = 8.00 Gb

The Board is about 24cm x 22cm
The case is a mini ATX or micro ATX? (uses half height/low profile cards in pci slots)

I am using a PCI graphics card

The priority is to use the same case, and graphics card, and not to go slower or less powerful.

I haven't a clue when I bought this board, but probably Vista/7 time.



Want a reasonable responsive machine - I don't play games on it, just domestic stuff, but usually trying to do 2 or 3 things at once!

One thing - The Power Supply is very hot to the touch. It is a specific Power supply for the case. I have upgraded it from the original, to cope with additional Drives etc.

I am getting increased crashes lately on Google Maps especially when viewing Streetview which on Chrome it invariably says Flash Has Crashed also its seems slow to show on Streetview
So Google has moved YouTube over to HTML5 Native ,but has retained Flashplayer for Maps and Streetview :mad:
And they say they are running down this protocol ,Yet no word on when Google maps is rid of Flash player and Java dependency completely, and activates HTML 5

Recycle bin left overs

I'm not sure that this belongs in a specific Windows version forum but here goes. My Recycle bin seems to be keeping stuff to itself. Can anybody tell me what is happening? I have an explanation and some speculations below?

I have a 700Gb partition, not on my main OS drive, which I use purely for data, backups etc. Recently when searching, using Everything search, on that partition I discovered thousands of files within the folder $Recycle.Bin. So showing system files I examined the folder and found within it a Recycle Bin folder and 8 other folders all with names beginning S-1-5- which I believe are the OS codes for different users. I am the sole user but looking at the last modified dates of the folders I think these are in fact left-over recycle bins from previous installations of Windows. On this particular 700Gb partition these 8 folders accounted for just short of 100,000 files and took up more than 100Gb of drive space.

Within the last few weeks I have emptied the Recycle bin and so it is clear that this emptying operation is ignoring all these left over bins. The OS does allow me to permanently delete the folders, after telling me that they are too big to recycle (an interesting message given that they seem to be already in the Recycle bin but, at the same time, suggesting that the OS sees them as ordinary folders).

Has anybody come across this and is there any way to prevent it from happening if I have to re-install (refresh or whatever the current word is) my operating system.

Major failure?

Just had a really strange thing happen.

Went t restart my Desktop PC, when it took an absolute age = over 20 minutes.

It ten stayed on the POST? screen - again for about 10 minutes.

Eventually it started to Wndows 10 (my main OS, and the default boot)

However, it only saw certain Hard drives.

My Documents (on a Separate SATA HDD) was not showing, nor was another SATA HDD.

I have restarted it again, and although it got to the POST screen, it has now put up a message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_ "

I'm thinking motherboard here?

Rebooting again, gives POST screen, selecting del (to enter BIOS) is giving a hang up on auto-detecting the SATA3G...
Has detected 5,6 & 1, but not 2,3 & 4

Stopped PC, disconnected both SATA HDDs, and rebooted.
Booting to W8.1 SSD
restarted, booted to BIOS
altered Boot priority to W10 SSD as first boot device.

Now booting OK to W10,

Maybe not Mobo?

Ideas?

It never took long to get used to Windows 10 and am glad I moved there and now at the point of wishing to try Cortana. But no matter how often I search and no matter how many sites I visit informing how good or indifferent Cortana is I can find nothing about how to get going. I even read an article comparing similar products but nothing more. Another entry suggests I should pretend I am in the USA and today elsewhere that Cortana by default opens on a page of Bing search results in the new Edge browser so, presumably, I would have to change browser.

Would somebody please assist? Even a reply that Cortana won't be available in the UK for a while would be a start.

Booting the netbook (Asus EeePC 1201N) from cold gives me just 700MB of the 2GB installed (confirmed by BIOS)

A reboot of said laptop brings back the full 1.7 (with the rest assumed reserved by the OS)

Thoughts on the cause of this????

The latest Computer Active says ditch Thunderbird, sighting several reasons but doesn`t come up with an alternative. Must say I`ve had no problems with it but what are the alternatives?

Homegroup (the dreaded)

OK, now I have 2 Computers running Windows 10, I am trying to get to grips with the dreaded Homegroup.

I say dreaded, because since MS rolled it out, I have never been able to get any of my computers to see any other computer via this method.

Lets give some information:
The 2 PC's involved = Home Desktop (DPC), and Laptop (LPC)

The desktop PC (DPC) if I open "Network" it shows:
Computers: (LPC) (DPC) & my NAS drive.
Opening "Network" on the LPC gives the same 3
Conclusion both PC's are visible on the network.

On LPC, if I d click the DPC I get asked to "enter the Network credentials (a username & and Password) (I have no clue which user name & password I need.
On loading W7 onto the DPC prior to W10 upgrade, I left the Password blank, but not entering a password fails.
Nothing seems to work, and I have tried all my passwords.

Next:
The DPC is showing it is a member of a Homegroup.
I have a password for this Homegroup.
If I go to the LPC, and Control Panel>Homegroup>Join Now
I get asked what I want to share, and then have to enter the password.
I type in the password, and after an age, I get a message:



I have tried the Homegroup troubleshooter.
Suggests Network problems (resets wireless network adaptor)
and then... tada... Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem :(

So there we have it.

Has anyone ever managed to get the Homegroup to work?
or
Should I just use my NAS drive (which both PC's CAN access) to transfer files.

...Trouble is... I don't like to give up. I feel if it's there, it should work... :mad:

My elderly mother likes to send the odd text. She has very poor eyesight and her hands aren't what they used to be, and her old phone is tiny.
I don't want to spend hundreds (or even one hundred) on a smart phone, so I was wondering if it was possible to send and receive texts from a tablet.

It won't have a sim card in, but will be connected to the net wirelessly.

I've seen pretty cheap tablets with 7" or bigger screens, now I see now that you can get a FIRE for £50.

Initial searches have shown me 'Viber' so I installed it onto my own Kindle Fire, but it won't work without me registering my mobile phone number. I'm assuming that Viber will somehow connect to my phone? This wouldn't work with my mothers phone as it's ancient and doesn't have wireless.

So.. is there any way to send and receive texts from the new £50 Fire, or any other cheap tablet (probably Android but definitely Not iPad)?

PROBLEMS WITH FREESERVE E-MAIL

For years I have used the same freeserve e-mail address. Around the 29 August 2015 I stopped getting e-mails via hotmail / windows log in on all my devices, Surface Pro 3, Windows phone, Kindle Fire & desktop pc. I have tried to figure it out and checked my e -mail setting via options. It said it was a send only account now for some reason (I never changed it). It indicated that I could change it to a send and receive setting, which I tried but said it couldnt complete this with error code 0x80072f06.

I use clearmymail spam filter and checked all the setting were still correct to send and recive via clearmymail, they were.

I searched the web and found out that EE had not renewed a domain certificate (or something). The indication was on a forum post that it had been sorted out and everyone should get thier back log of e mails and everything should be back to normal. I have not, and still cannot recive e mail (but I can send them)?

Anyone any idea how I can get my e mail back up and running.

Firstly, if this is in the wrong place then would Admin. please move it. Thank you. I have been using Cyberlink PowerDirector for many years and PD12 was bundled on my recent HP Pavilion purchase.

I have a friend who has recently video'd a public meeting with what I would call an ordinary camcorder. But the meeting was held in a large room and he didn't have any boom mics or other sound recording equipment, the audio being recorded by his camcorder. The resulting audio is not that good although discernable.

My question is, is there a module or a newer version of PD that will allow me to improve on the audio track because at the moment there is a lot of echo ?

I know that there are people on here who are very well versed in Cyberlink products and I hoping that someone will be able to answer my question and be able to help.

I have been setting up my new laptop. My primary Email account is asking for my password. I changed it 12 months ago and promptly forgot it. :confused: Chrome has now sent it to one of my other Email accounts which I have the password for. :) Unfortunately, I can only get into my primary Email account on my pc. :( I used to click on the 'gmail' at the top right of my screen and up would pop the list of Email addresses. I would click on one and get into it. Now there is only the primary one. Has anyone any advice please?

Thanks to WebUser for alerting us to a) Microsoft downloading Windows 10 without our consent (which I think is atrocious abusive behaviour) and advising us how to remove that update.

I found the W10 download directory ($Windows.~BT) which appeared on my C: dive, and though I tried to remove it manually it refused to go.

I just wondered what the view is re the W10 update settings.

I think, needless to say, I've got them switched off where I can switch off and set to notify restart where I can't.

NB. The settings in the screen shots below are set that way just so I could post examples of them.

When you read the defaults settings for updates, which you don't get an option to change during install, when read together it seems like something akin to remote assistance is on in W10 by default, (worrying to say the least) and while you are away from your PC with it supposedly safely powered down, some MS bot will have the ability to power it on and start downloading updates. In addition it also seems to read that having these settings at default gives MS the authority to use your PC as a global file sharing resource connecting you system to other computers anywhere in the world.:( More than worrying pretty alarming I would think.

Somebody tell me I'm wrong. You know how I worry so. :rolleyes::D

Hi,

I seem to have been unable to discover how to keep my Edge Browser window in the same place.

I'm on about a Desktop PC here viewing on a 23" monitor (via HDMI)

By this, I don't mean it moves around the screen, but that I may have it open in the lower 3/4 of the screen, with say an inch to the top and Left hand side. If I then close the window (cross, or Alt+F4) next time I open it, it could be anywhere except where I left it. It's usually much smaller, but occasionally full screen (very rarely do I use full screen for anything).

Back in the days of XP, I seem to remember there was a way of locking it in size and position, I seem to remember trying the same method in 7, and it not working. (not sure about Vista). Since it didn't work for me in 7, I have forgotton the method I used to use in XP, so is there a new method of doing this?

Edge in particular seems much worse than I can remember any window behaving in Windows 8(.1).

The route I tested was from our location to Haydock Park Race track of which there are several permutations over the 12/13 odd miles can be about anything up to 90 minutes Google came up Trumps giving the best A to B route but when Expanded it started wandering on to other routes where you have to change buses several times!

Organising Edge Favorites

I received a phone call from a relative asking how to create a new folder in Microsoft Edge Favorites.
She likes detailed instructions and screenshots :), so I sent her this …..

As an example, I have a number of addresses associated with Windows 10 spread about in Favorites, so I created a new sub-folder and named it Windows 10 Items.
I then dragged these five (and others) addresses below into the new folder for quicker access.
I’ve since added several of these sub-folders for various categories to organise my growing list of Favorites.

You probably already know this, but for those who don’t …..

Right-click within your Favorites list and select the option Create new folder.
The new folder will appear at the bottom of your list.
Give it an appropriate name … then drag it up or down your list to the position you prefer.



BTW, the Edge Favorites are stored (almost hidden :rolleyes:) in ….

A lot of us came from the CA forums, and I for one still read CA as well as WU.

So in issue 457, I was reading "Windows 10 problems fixed". Number 11 (p56) really had me laughing. Yes - I too looked at Sony's page and also saw the messages about "no Windows 10 drivers". Not sure if Sony will or won't produce drivers for Windows 10, but Windows obviously does, as My Sony Vaio drivers have been updated.

I also had issues with Partitions.

In a different vein, the previous page (Item 10) talks about Epson R300 Printer, I have an R200, and also had problems, but doing as the article said (before I found it :rolleyes: sorted mine out too)

I read in CA #458 Page 6 Highlighted footnote entitled: Remember Remember...Windows 10 Update in November that they are about to hand out a big Fix update with many new features being added such as a Messenger on the desktop...Could this mean that their Object RTC feature is being launched too?

As for the Redstone Pair of updates for Spring / Summer 2016 does that feel like a Final fix and Tidy up if this Version is what in old Parlance would be a Service Pack...(SP.x)
I do have a question after this is installed, will we be calling this Windows 10 SP1 or even Version 10.1?

I live in Castleford, a highly rugby league centric town. As part of their "believe in better" policy Sky have made tonight's match NOT available on TV either on any channel or via the "red button".
You have to sit round a Windows PC or an i-Pad, or even worse a smartphone ?
The local pubs, who pay near on £1,000 a month to Sky, can't put on for their would be customers?
I just rang them up (SKY) and they confirmed this.
"Surely you first platform for availability should be the TV, why would a family with a 55" HD TV want to watch it on a small device or try to work around it?" I asked.

No logical response from "believe in better" Sky.

I mentioned it to a Sky "chugger" in the shopping centre today and he was clueless.

Basically I'm happy(ish) to report ... nothing to report about are old chum Ian :D

I think it's true that his kids have finally all flown the coop, and seem quite content and happy making their own way in the world ... although they all still live close.
... He's getting a bit of well earned him time which him and Mrs M are making the most of.

... His troubles are under control ... the doctors say that while his current treatment isn't having much on an effect on the gremlins ... equally nor is it (or the gremlins) having much effect on him either ... so he's felt well enough to have been somewhere warm on holiday ... and both he and his wife sounds to have had a dashed good time ...

In the same vein of no news being good news ... I'll be keeping in touch with him ... but won't be nagging either him or you about the obvious.... Obviously I will report back if anything worth reporting comes up - but hopefully it won't for a long time. As I've said - no news ... :D

Another request for help. I want to create text to follow a winding line path, so that in the end I can delete the line and leave only text that looks like it is following a winding mountain road. Computer Active - issue 458 - ran a feature 'Software You Must Uninstall' which included the advice 'Ditch Flash for good......

Albeit the FP section did end with ..'Or keep Flash - but make it safe' etc etc. However, the initial section to dump was enough to convince me to follow the advice so I did. Especially when being informed You Tube has dropped it for the safer (and less memory hungry) HTML5 in January and Amazon has banned Flash Adverts. Firefox has blocked Flash altogether since July.

Checking it out with YouTube, fine no Flash required, no problems. Then, being a follower of the thread 'Let's Rock', here in Open Forum, I'm now faced with 'a plug in is required to display this content' and can't play the YouTube file unless the full url is posted.

I'm puzzled by this, two magazines published by the same company, one says 'Dump Flash' but the minute I follow the advice the other won't let me view a YouTube link.

Will WebUser be following YouTube's decision and the advice of CA to dump Flash or is this only one expert's opinion?

Perhaps any posting to the thread could be accompanied by the full url just in case more than me has dumped Flash.

Today, when trying to receive my emails through Thunderbird, got Add Security Exception dialogue pop up for my Sky account, but when I click verify account, nothing happens. New Webmail account

Good Evening All

I want to set up a new webmail account to cover the time coming soon when I change my ISP at contract end and get a new client e-mail address. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do it and the various 'help' wizards etc. are really confusing me.

I use Windows Live Mail for my Talk Talk (Tiscali) account as does my wife on her log-in. She has an Outlook.com account - updated from Hotmail - which shows in her WLM page, but can't remember how she did it, and I want to set up the same thing with Outlook.com for myself.

I do have a Gmail account, but can't see how to link it to my WLM account without changing things to (?) IMAP from POP - would that be detrimental ?

Please can someone tell me how to do this or point me to links for computer dummies like me which will lead me gently by the hand to get what I want sorted out?

Edge Browser.

Am I just not looking in the right place :confused:

When I click on a download instead of going to a download page and allowing a read before actually clicking the download button and then being asked if I either want to 'Run' or 'save to'.

The link takes me to the download page where there is clearly a download button but Edge just starts the download immediately to the default W10 download folder.

I've looked high and low for something that will first stop automatically downloading stuff and then allow me to choose the destination folder but I'm not having much luck.

I know Edge is still work in progress but surely having a modicum of control of what downloads and to where has to be a primary issue. I'm sure it must be there somewhere has anybody else trod this path on W10.

A guy buys a 65 inch TV which develops a problem, pixels on the screen went blank.

Returned to a Curry's store, it was discovered to be a fly stuck in the back, the buyer was informed the damage was not covered by the warranty, this being an 'act of God' and the store refused to repair it for free. Cost would be £95.

I've heard of a few good 'uns worth a chuckle even experienced one personally but this one is priceless.

However, the buyer persisted and finally Curry's have apologised and the TV is being repaired for free.

What laptop should I buy?

I need a new laptop. I hope that the members of this forum can help me to decide which is the one. I need as large a screen as possible. I don't want Windows 10. I don't need a gaming laptop. The laptop will be used for internet and playing games (Hidden Object, Solitaire etc). I want to spend up to £300. I've been looking online, but haven't gone looking at any laptops in the shops yet. I'm 70 yrs old and wheelchair bound. I don't want to be treated in a condescending way. I have seen this in the assistant's face when he/she sees me coming into the shop. This is so annoying.:mad: Old I maybe, but I've still got all my marbles. ;) I want to get one soon, so I do hope that you will help me with some suggestions.

Inexplicable red zig-zag lines in Word

My daughter is using Word to type her thesis and every so often, a whole paragraph appears with a zigzag red line under it. Since it is a whole paragraph, it does not seem to be related to the spelling checker.

I looked for solutions on the web and it suggested to go to the Review tab, make sure Track Changes was not marked and then to click on Accept All Changes. This seems to do nothing at all.

All very mysterious. Any ideas?

What smartphone?

Just been on hols and took phone, tablet for internet access and emails, and camera for photos - too much baggage to carry around! Therefore thinking I need a smartphone but I only make the occasional phone call and text and £20 on my PAYG Nokia lasts me more than 6 mths so I don't want to have to commit to a monthly cost. Can I swap my existing sim (O2) into a new phone thus keeping my number and all my contact details?
I am torn between Samsung Galaxy A3 and Motorola moto g (3rd generation) as these seem to get the best CA reviews.

Windows 7 fails to boot after Windows 10 rolled back

Hi,

Can anyone help with this problem, please?

I have just rolled back Windows 10 to Windows 7 SP1. I had doubts that it would all go smoothly and was right. Although Windows 7 is now back, it will not boot properly; it gets as far as the 'Welcome' screen them waits for about 30 seconds and then produces a 'Blue Screen'

However if I select F8 when booting starts, I am able to boot into 'Safe Mode' and there do not appear to be any problems.

I have used the Windows 7 installation disc to try and resolve the problem and it said it found and repaired a problem but the computer still will not boot and still produces the BSOD. It keeps producing 'minidumps' but I can't find them anywhere and probably could not understand them if I found them. I have also tried using a 'Windows 7 64-bit Rescue Disc' which was created by some backup software, but this does not help either.

Has anyone any ideas how I can resolve the problem other than by re-installing Windows 7?

Novice looking for advice

My laptop recently died due to some kind of hard drive failure. Upon booting the machine simply states that it can't find the HDD. I've followed various guides around the internet but nothing has enabled me to resurrect the machine. I eventually gave in and bought a new laptop, consigning the other to the attic.

Recently my daughter has been asking for a laptop on which she can do her homework and I wondered if I might fix up the old one to save some money. I know I can fit a new HDD for a reasonable price but this is where my novice levels of IT knowledge begin to hinder me. How would I then get the necessary software on there to make it work? The restore options I created when the laptop were new have been lost (presumably while moving house) so they are not an option - I always intended to make backups but never got around to it (Lesson learned!). I assume I may be able to get some of these files/drivers from the website of the manufacturer?

In terms of an o/s I have the license details for Windows 7 Professional edition. Would I be able to download and install it to the new HDD? Or would MS want me to buy a new license? Would I be better off installing a version of Linux?

Is all this possible or is the laptop truly dead?

Speeding up Win 10 - only works if you have a second physical disk

It's worth emphasising THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A SECOND PHYSICAL DISK ... and it can't be a USB.

One of the mods I always do on my machines is to fix the size of the paging file.
Usually - as an extra "twiddle" ... I create a dedicated partition so it's not in the way.
Not so much a speed thing ... mainly because it reduces fragmentation ...
On a system with a massive file that's constantly changing it's "shape" on the disk ... You are bound to get fragmentation ... making it a fixed size reduces this significantly.

Since win 98 I've dutifully followed the formula; ram x 2.5 ... and used that figure to create a partition at the very end of the disk. On systems with more than one disk ... the advice is to create the pagefile on the second disk. This means that on an IDE disk the second header ... on sata ... a seperate channel.
This allows windows to write simultaneously to both disks ... and so you get a small speed increase. ... As I say - it's mainly about fragmentation - the increase really is small.
If you have an SSD plus a mechanical drive ... moving the swap will also extend the life of the SSD ... so another (more substantial) win.
Having a poke round ... as those of you who've upgraded will know Windows 10 (and 8) also has a smaller swapfile.

I don't make a habit of measuring mine ... but the question was recently asked ... so I timed the startup times ... So I knew that Win 10 took 11 seconds ... note "took" not "takes"!

Anyhow ... I've shifted both the Page and Swap files to their own partition at the end of my second (1Tb) drive.
I've timed it about ten times now ... and I swear I'm surprised ... the system now takes 9 seconds.

I wasn't expecting a measurable difference ... but it's there... 2 seconds!! It's not a massive change ... and what can you do in 2 seconds .... not much.
As I say it's about fragmentation not speed ... but while it's not massive - it's a significant increase ...

bittorrent is something most people dislike beacuse of what its asoseated with. however the protocal is excilent for syncing data which is what bittorrent sync does. to set it up install sync on 2 computers and create a key by selecting which folder to sync. once done copy the sync key to the other computer and paste it in, selecting a blank hard drive if possable. you will notice it indexing and then will start syncing. you will notice 3 dots clicking this and selecting arcive will show you delited files which will be removed after 30 days.

Installing Windows 10 problems

As i am installing widows 10 it tells me i need to uninstall a couple apps because they are "isn't compatible with Windows 10".

I'd just got to the second of the three "S"s this morning.
Stood in the shower and just caught the back of a story on the news.

Skype is apparently down ... MS are working on the problem.... that's all I heard.

It's possibly not affecting everyone ... they said "some" users may not be able to log in.
Not looked for more details on the what or why .- sorry.

What is the point of live tiles?

I am one of those fortunate enough to have a desktop computer with two monitors. In Windows 8.1 if I wanted I could keep the Start screen up in one monitor, with it's live tiles, and read emails etc in the other. It seems that option is no longer available.

The Start menu with it's live tiles stays on screen only if you stop doing everything else. I thought that there would be an option to, perhaps, start with a full screen start menu as before. There is - it's called Tablet mode. However, microsoft in it's inscrutable wisdom decided that if you had two screens then you would not want Tablet mode and so all the options to switch to Tablet mode are greyed out.

I thought I had got round it by setting the option to "Automatically switch to tablet mode" when I sign in. But Windows 10 will not allow that. As soon as I log in I get a message along the lines that I have exited Tablet mode because it is not available with multi-screen setups.

So what is the point of live tiles in a Desktop computer?
