Sticky Keys and the On-Screen Keyboard

Recently I fractured my left wrist which has been a bit inconvenient even though I'm mainly right-handed - it means I have only 1 finger to type with instead of 2! One thing which is very awkward is when you need to use 2 or 3 keys at once - Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+Shift+S (opens the sidebar in Opera), Ctrl+Shift+L (allows you to 'paste and go' or 'paste and search' in Internet Explorer) and so on. I've found 2 ways round this so far:

1. On-Screen Keyboard
This lets you do things which need 2 or 3 keys to be pressed simultaneously by using your mouse pointer. Keys such as Ctrl effectively remain pressed until the command is completed. You can use the AltGr key to get accented vowels this way too - á, é, í, ó, ú.

2. Sticky Keys
You can enable this feature by going to Control Panel>Ease of Access Center (sic), then click on 'Make the keyboard easier to use'. Under 'Make it easier to type', tick 'Turn on Sticky Keys' then click 'Set up Sticky Keys'. I the new window, tick 'Turn on Sticky Keys' again, then untick 'Turn off Sticky Keys when two keys are pressed at once' - this will allow you to click Ctrl then C or V [I][U]separately[U][I] to Copy or Paste something without the need to press the keys simultaneously - AltGr will work this way too. Apply and OK the changes you've made.

I hope this all makes sense as I've found these procedures very useful.

Hi,
I have an Asus M5A78L-M-USB3 board.

I'm not sure how old it is, but probably older than I think.

Its got an AMD Phenom(tm) ll X6 1055T 2.80 GHz processor.

I have been having issues with the Ethernet failing, so now am using a wireless dongle. This is slow.

My PC (desktop) is a small size case, so all the cards need to have low profile back plates.

I am going to reinstall Windows 8, upgrade it to 8.1, then 10.

I have checked to see if there are updated drivers for my onboard network adaptor: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - There aren't.

I am going to have to fit an separate one.

My board has slots like this:


My Question is:
what should I be looking for for running Windows 10, bearing in mind it has to fit my slots (PCIe2?)

Any suggestions? Links?

Problem running Windows 10?

I have an Acer Aspire V3-571 laptop which was new in Sept 2012. A couple of weeks ago I clicked on the Windows 10 icon & ‘Check your PC’ and it confirmed it would run Windows 10.

A few days ago I decided to check again, this time with my printer plugged in, & I got the following message:

‘This PC will have problems running Windows 10
Devices
The device manufacturers haven’t made these devices compatible with Windows 10, so they will cause problems. Check with the manufacturers for support.
Broadcom Virtual Wireless Adapter
You might not be able to connect to the internet.’

Can somebody please tell me what a Broadcom Virtual Wireless Adapter is? Is it something to do with the printer, or has something changed in my laptop in the last couple of weeks? It’s not a wireless printer.

Problem running Windows 10?

It is almost time to kiss and cuddle.

Way back in January, we were trying to accept that in a few short weeks, our daughter would be away on a six month detachment, leaving behind her husband and not yet 3yr old daughter.

On the night of departure after bathing her daughter and putting her to bed, her transport arrived in the dead of night and she was away. We were there at the time and words cannot express how we all felt.

Birthdays, anniversary's, winter, spring and summer seasons have all been clocked up and in three weeks she will be home.

Of course I am fully aware that each of us may well have been through this traumatic time, but it's only when it's "you" that you feel something.

We have the 26th of next month penciled in as that is when they are to travel down to us after a few brief days together. So after wishing the time away, it is almost time to breath a sigh of relief.

It is almost time to kiss and cuddle.

If It means I can get a Steady 5 to 6 MBps plus average Speed that will be fine Don't want 10 Gps nor superfast Premium speeds

I had to uninstall Firefox and reinstore Firefox which put Firefox back to default all my add ons and plug ins were gone I did a system restore to a earlier time is there any way you can to save you Firefox add ons and plug ins ? The system restore did not work to put back my Firefox browser as it was ?

When I set the Check Disk to run on my c hard drive after rebooting the system, it refuses to start because it says there is some suspect software in the OS.
Can anybody tell me how I might be able to locate this suspect software so I can dish it? I've tried a full system restore without success.

First thing to emphasise is I'd already done the upgrade... so MS know who I am.
Second thing is I'm using a Microsoft e-mail (my_id@live.co.uk) account to log in with.
These two steps are important to the success of the process.
Also check that your upgraded win 10 is activated

Last night the telly was appalling - so I decided that it was a sign to do a proper job ... and have a go at performing a clean install with my Win 10 .ISO.

It's been posted elsewhere ... but if you want to make an .ISO or USB memory stick of the install files download the media creator from here. It's easy to do ... and everyone should have one ... before you need it.

So I was using a DVD ... it could just as easily have been the USB stick.

Insert the DVD ... restart the machine ... press any key to boot from DVD/USB.
The installer starts ...

Select your country settings
Select the install Now option.
You'll then be asked to enter your product key DON't - instead cick skip
If you can't ... enter a serial number which will be refused ... and then click do this later.

Accept the license.
Then select Custom install Windows
(First time it's the upgrade ... second time it's a custom install)

Then you'll be asked Where to install

On a "standard" machine this will look something like


Select your windows partition ...
I then clicked Delete **Yes this will do what it says - so BACK UP your Data FIRST!!!**

Make sure the partition (now showing as Unallocated Space is still selected.
Click Next
Work your way through the screens.
*IF AT ANY POINT YOU ARE ASKED FOR A SERIAL NUMBER - CLICK NEXT**
Hold your nerve !!! (it passes the time :D)

There will be the usual whizzing and banging, clicking and flashes!!

Eventually (about half an hour) you'll be asked a few configuration questions ... and then
You'll be asked to LOG ON (using a PIN may be offered ... DON't!! (not yet!)

Make the first log in an online logon using your MS e-mail

Have a bit of a look round - check drivers etc.

Then Restart ... log in again using your MS e-mail.

And that should be the Job Done!

Menu | Settings | account - should show you as activated.

You can then logon using any option you want.

I'm sure there are other ways of doing this (probably better written up too)
But I can confirm that this worked for me.

I have a cleanly installed - activated, completely legal windows 10 :D

excuse my potential dumbness with this question i have perused the win 10 update threads but didn't find an answer ( or possibly missed one that did)
to this question i have win 7 pro i have the win 10 upgrade reserved my question is when i upgrade to win 10 is this like a reformat will i lose all my files films music settings etc or does it just change settings like a windows update etc i just need to know if i need to move all my stuff onto a portable hard drive so i keep them safe during the upgrade or is it safe to just do the upgrade without the worry of losing my files, programs, browser favs etc ??

You know how it is, you're going about your business when someone catches you eye and you think you either know them or they are someone from the media.

Yesterday I had such a feeling. We happened to be in Lidl of all places and don't laugh because three weeks ago, David Beckham was in our local Morrisons (see Dorset Echo report), and I saw someone that appeared to be from a 70's group. My wife passed it off with a "why would he be in here?" comment. Then on the bus home, we passed the marina with hundreds of boats moored up, and there walking between the many craft of all sizes in a restricted area, was that same person carrying his Lidl's bags. So maybe I was right after all, but I'm damned if I can remember his name, ah well, back to google,

CCleaner in Win10

Having just installed Win10 on the laptop I found it a bit sluggish to boot up and programs to open so I decided to use CCleaner for the first time in the new OS. So glad I did. There was a large amount of files to be cleaned, especially in the registry. If you find your PC is not so fast as before this could be the reason.

Once cleaned out it is much zippier. Programs open quickly like before and it just feels nicer to use. Haven`t rebooted yet so can`t comment on start up times but I am sure it will have improved. I have to wait and see on that one.

Just remember to save a copy of the reg just in case. I did but the OS is still working 100%.

Windows 10 upgrade and Kaspersky

I ran the Windows 10 upgrade this evening on my Dell XPS Laptop.
Installation went without a hitch but then I discovered that my Kaspersky Internet Security was no longer running. The folder was there but no shortcuts on the desktop and it was obviously not running. Windows Defender and Windows firewall had been activated. I tried re installing using the original CD. It failed telling me that a newer version was already installed. So it was but all attempts to run it defeated me. I went to the Kasperky website and downloaded the latest version. Installed it and entered my Activation code. Now it is running again without any problems. It seems that Windows 10 upgrade decided it was not compatible and stopped it. Tomorrow I will see what else is no longer running.

I have a virus that slows firefox down and pops up a script message. When I have searched google about message it says cdn.adnxs is a browser hijacker.

Creating Network shares \ mapping network drives

This might be of interest to a few ...
For ages not I've had all my "stuff" stored on NAS boxes attached to my network ... it's a relic from my working days...

Top and bottom is all my "special places" appear as a "mapped" network drives ... once set up it's simple to access documents, music, photos ... all my digital life in fact is stored in my LAN.

Now we have Windows 10.
I converted yesterday and I've been configuring various things....

I started yesterday with the online log on ... e-mail and password.
Quite a lot of the settings from the insider preview have synced over to my "real" machine.

And being helpful - this morning windows suggested I might like to use a PIN to log in with... seemed worth a try ... so I went with it.

Then I accessed the network and sharing centre checked the settings and changed the workgroup.

Then I went to create the map
\\192.168.254.151\myshare - entered the ID and password ... Unable to connect to the server.
Tried browsing the network - unable to access the network.

I checked just about every configuration option I could think of ... windows 10 was fine on the internet ... but it wouldn't access my humble network.

Went to stressco with Mrs I ... came back ... and started the machine.

The log on came up ... asking for a PIN ... but there was an extra button ... offering me logon options.

I clicked that ... and there was an option to enter my e-mail password.

I went for that ... and tried to map the drive for the 100000th time ...
Success!!!
I quickly mapped up all the drives I use.

Then logged off ... logged in using the PIN ... and there they all were ... working a treat.

I tried to map another ... and windows reported it was unable to access the server!!!!
So it appears that if you log in to 10 using a PIN ... you only get a restricted set of access rights... or possibly administrator rights.

For weeks now the update symbol foe win 10 has sat in the task bar. Clicked to reserve weeks ago and system checked and accepted. This morning symbol has disapeared.
Any idea whats going on?

To download and set up was about 4 hours.

I like most of it...but I downloaded the 'classic shell' to get the W7 menu.

I think I'll stay with it. Let see how it goes.:confused:

Internet a bit unstable, can you advise please?

Had a windows update on Monday and I notice that when I wait for my desktop to load, that my network 2 internet access icon on the bottom right of the pc screen sometimes says it can't connect to the net and there's a red cross. After a few seconds (what feels like a life time) it connects. :confused:

Can you tell me what this means please and how can it be resolved? Many thanks.

Upgrade to windows 10

Just completed the upgrade on one of my computers. It took about 50/55 minutes from start to finish and was very straight forward. All my programmes work as before so no issues there that I can see. The start screen is different to Windows 8.1 as advertised so I'll have to customise it again but that's not a huge issue. Instead of scrolling side to side it scrolls up and down.

I'll check it out though before upgrading my other machines.

After All The Fuss......

Called in to our club room today, not normally a club meeting day but the room was not booked and a couple of the lads were there doing some hardware work.

One had gone to the bother recently and installed Windows 10 beta on one of the machines. No tweaking since download, just a bare bones o.s. to play with. Yours truly spent an hour on it, even downloaded a couple of programs, VLC and CCleaner just for the hell as like.

After the hour I thought, well now, W10 looks good but not exactly making me itch to be rid of W7. The lads with W8 can't wait, one of them is looking forward to his finger nails getting back to normal.

Bid them farewell and walked out the door thinking, after all the fuss I can't see me having a reason to go to the bother for quite some time.

Back home, the weather is atrocious, might as well take a back up of W7 plus Docs. The thought struck me, I use Acronis 2012, will it be compatible with W10?

On to Google then http://ift.tt/1I1LxcG and to me the answer reads, 'No it won't be, only Acronis 2015.' So there's a disappointment, upgrade to 2015 for a further £40 or dump 2012 and look for a freebie.

Rant over, I'll wait and see what Santa brings.

Removing the GWX folder in Windows 7 SP1

Hi,

I have noticed that a folder called GWX has been installed recently by Windows Update in my Windows\system32 folder. Apparently this is some advertising for Windows 10 that Microsoft has been putting on people's computers and it should give rise to a Windows icon appearing in the system tray.

Since this folder has been installed I have no icon in the system tray but my computer takes ages to close down and as I am not sure whether or not I want Windows 10 at the moment can I just delete this folder so that my computer will shut down as it used to? At the moment it is taking nearly a minute to shut down whereas before, it took about 15-20 seconds.

Does anyone know whether it is safe simply to delete the folder and the programs it contains?

My notebook (as I said before) is a convertible and I've got a hang up about a 2 or 3 thing.

W8.1 on my convertible seems like it was designed for that type of machine and works very well and I am quite happy with it on a convertible.

From what I've seen of 10 I'm not in all that much of a hurry to change the notebook and possibly loose some of the functionality of 8.1 just for a compromise which is geared to better suit mouse only users. But I really need to give 10 a fair shake on the Yoga to make my decision.

Also the UEFI interface on the Yoga has some nice functions most of which I haven't actually used yet in anger and have only clicked around to see whats there. For instance Many people claim there is no way of changing the boot order for 8.1 but on the Lenovo Yoga I can go into UEFI from the desktop and access the boot order to changed it. (not at boot, I'm locked out going into the BIOS the usual way at boot) But I am not sure if this facility is a W8.1 feature or a Lenovo feature. I did ask Lenovo support but quite frankly they were as much use a a chocolate teapot.

In addition to the above, when I got the Yoga it initially fired up with W8 but immediately prompted upgrade to 8.1. I ran it on 8 for a few days just out of curiosity and then upgraded to 8.1 which I have been very happy with.

Now my recovery partition (the revert to OEM set up job) will of course be W8 so if I didn't like 10 on the convertible and ran the recovery partition would I still get an offer to upgrade to W8.1 from W8 :confused:

I've got an image of my current Yoga 8.1 but if the UEFI interface is a Lenova feature I have a worry that installing 10 may somehow cock this up and then worse maybe not allow the imaged to be accepted.

I'm guessing that taking 10 (with fingers crossed) as an upgrade would not effect the UEFI desktop interface even if it is a purely Lenovo feature but if I then decided to, at some point, do a clean install of 10 from the much talked about future ISO how would the above be effected.

It all seems a bit of a keep your fingers and legs crossed, spit on your palms, take an image at every corner, keep a firm hand on the mouse and trust in the Lord sort of exercise.:D

Why can't I send myself emails ??

Hiya,

Can anyone tell me please why I can't receive emails that I send to my own email address.

I could once ages ago, but for some reason now I can't.
If I take photos for instance on my phone I'm unable to send them to my email to save in my pictures folder.
I've had to open a Gmail account for this purpose but I'd rather do it my old way.

I'm still using XP and Outlook Express.

Is there something in settings I may have inadvertently checked/unchecked.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I hope anybody of you can help me with my issue. I just read that some types of ipods (also the Nano) are not able to play Apple music... for what reasons ever. And Apple said they haven't planned to change this in the future. So... is there another possibility how I could play the apple music with my ipod though?

Hi,

I have read various opinions here about 10.

10 from 7, 10 from 8(.1) etc.

A while ago I posted about upgrading from my Windows 8.1 on my desktop, and yes, I now have the little windows icon in the taskbar, but have not yet progressed it - Like has been said, there's 12 months to go yet, and the start usually highlights issues that nobody foresaw.

I'll wait awhile.

Now, I've bought a new SSD - a Corsair 256Gb.

I intend to install Windows 8 on it, and get it fully up to date (over the next few weeks) and load very liitle on to it.

Most stuff is on a standard 1TB drive anyway.

I have read about clean installs (from isos). This isn't instantly available at the moment?

My intention is to load Windows 8, update it all, and then load W10. Once on, I thought I'd create an image (using Macrim Reflect).

This then would form a backup I could reload from.

Am I likely to have any problems doing this?

Easy one, Many Regions of the the world will be Downloading at the same Time as yourself (ex the same server) and Despite the Timezone differences It is Expected to put a strain on the Internet Indirectly so expect a Few days of Slow downloads and as for the W10 Download they could be crawling @ Dial up speeds as the MS server will be on its busiest few days ever ...I say expect an outage or 2 with this expected bumper Traffic load

Over the weekend i carried some spring cleaning on my pc because it was very slow , i gained quite a lot of gbyte and is now faster the only thing is that sometime ig get this coming up on the monitor
THERE WAS A PROBLEM STARTING "TASK SCHEDULERHELPER.DLL THE SPECIFIED MODULE COULD NOT BE FOUND"

I wonder if I deleted some files without knowing it, i never done this sort of cleaning up before and i followed the in instructions in the help guide. PC Dell C521, OS windows7 Home premium.

How to identify files with missing extensions

Hi all,

I'm a long time reader, first time poster - but I discovered something this morning that I believe maybe useful for some...

My wife received an email from a trusted source with an attachment she had been expecting - namely, a poster design draft for her job.

The problem was, the sender sent the file without saving it correctly with an appropriate extension (.doc, .pdf etc) & when she downloaded it - attempting to open it in Word just brought up the hex converter. The same result in PDF Xchange etc.

She asked the sender to send it again only to receive the same result. In business, it is not uncommon to receive a file the other party can't open for whatever technical reason - but it can be embarrassing asking for it to be sent again & again to no avail.

So, she asked me to have a look at it. Normally I wouldn't advocate opening an unknown file type, but it it's come from a trusted source & they've confirmed that they've sent it - to save any embarrassment here's how to identify the type of file you have:

Firstly, to be on the safe side - upload the unknown file type to www.virustotal.com - if you get no hits then you're good to go.

Next, go to: http://ift.tt/rK7BOZ & download "TrIDnet File Identifier" which is the Zip file & underneath is the vital RAR file containing the file definitions to make it work.

Using something like 7zip or Winzip - extract the folder containing TrIDnet & extract the RAR definition file to the same directory. i.e. c:\tridnet\

Once you have the TrIDnet.exe file available, open it up & press the "Rescan Defs" button. There should be just shy of 6000 so it caters for most file types.

Click "Browse" to locate the file missing it's extension & then click "Analyze"

It will then analyse the code of the file and produce a file type underneath (.pdf .jpg .doc etc)

Go to the file missing it's extension in Explorer & add the file type identified by TrIDnet to the file name (filename.jpg). The icon will then change to the relevant type & you should be able to open it.

In my wife's case, the file was a .jpg - which never crossed my mind to try for a poster draft!!

took 10 mins to load up today and I have lost my desktop icons

activate problem Win 8.1

Asus X205TA - cannot activate win 8.1 as there is no id anywhere, the only id is in the software but Microsoft does not recognise the id. How do I activate (MS 'phone number ?) or can this little computer run Win 7 HP 32/64 or a lightweight version of Linux as I actually hate win 8.1 already.

In issue 375 there is an article about ripping CD's & DVD's and at the end it says you can rip them legally as long as you own them. But from another article i've read online this is no longer the case as this was overturned by the High Court on the 17th July 2015. (http://bit.ly/1Ipt23f) so it is now illegal to do that again.:confused:

My niece thought she had a real bargain when she bought a laptop running Windows 7 off someone she met at college. But to her horror she found that the Windows 7 that was on the laptop is not genuine. I could put a Linux distro on the laptop but that's not what she wants. Does anyone know the price of a Windows 7 or 8 installation disk please.

Postie was early and thankfully he was bringing my eagerly awaited WebUser issue 376. I say eagerly as it contains what everyone is wondering, should we go for 10 or stay put for a while?

Put me feather duster to one side, (it's hissing down so helping out with the housework to pass the time). Coffee made, settle down and only halfway into the feature W10: The Truth confirms my earlier decision stay put for a while.

Thanks Robert and all who contributed to this very helpful feature, especially for the likes of me, some experience but not an expert by any means.

Last week your sister mag, Computer Active's feature on the subject, in my opinion, did not enable anyone to decide one or tother WebUser does. So, anyone out there not a regular reader and not sure whether to upgrade or not, then get up early Wednesday and make sure of buying your copy. You won't regret it.
