I'm hoping to buy as a Christmas gift the laptop that is recommended in Computeractive - Asus Laptop X555LA-XX290H.

However, I have given away my old copies of Computeractive so I cannot find the actual review of the laptop - which was some time ago. Is there any way that I can find a copy of this anywhere?

Windows Defender - do I need it?

Since the major upgrade to Windows 10 Pro a few days ago I keep getting notifications popping up saying that Windows Defender has a problem - when I go to Windows Defender it tells me that both Defender and Norton are both turned off, although Norton is working correctly.
Do I need Windows Defender (it never made its presence known in Windows 7 Ultimate), and if not how do I get rid of it?

Google adds ability to invite non-Google users to Hangouts (as Guests)

About time too! Google has knocked down the only restriction with Google Hangouts allowing Non Google account holders to participate in a Hangout
Quote:

Google today announced a new feature for its Hangouts chat and video calling application that allows meeting organizers to invite users to calls even if they don't have Google accounts. Google says this will make it easier for businesses to host conferences on Google Hangouts with outside parties, such as clients or consultants. This move follows Google's divorcing of Hangouts from its Google+ social network earlier this year.

Organizers of Hangouts conferences will still need to have Google accounts, but those that they invite to the party will be able to join by just clicking a link and without having to fill out a form or give any extra information apart from their name. Organizers will still have the ability to manage adding, muting, and ejecting of participants from meetings.
Only Thing I cannot show you is just how these previously excluded people can join in
There might be clues on this URL? Google adds ability to invite non-Google users to Hangouts posted November 19th

If you are curious about the WebRTC protocol Do have a try on some of these links It only will take you less than a minute to Go Live Join in a "live discussion(Don't need a Web can use it IM style or with a microphone (can mix and match...Google Hangouts is Identical To this
The big advantage over the older type connecting method is this is Compact and secure if you do not have a room code you are le excluded...Ditto with a Public live session you cannot join in until Your name appears in the top 8 (usually) names on the List otherwise you are listening or looking at the broadcast as a Lurker ...The room starter has control of the Moderation and can mute you if there's an issue that the only rule>ditto you can block too so it works both ways:cool: ...There is also a Skype style service on some link but they are never free and Territory limited in many cases Look up the FAQ/support notes.. >A 1 to 1 call on the normal path is secure/private and you won't have Chatbots interrupting(as on IM apps)

All these links on this search (and Google Hangouts too >New main Homepage) do let you test the equipment out ,sound level, video and texting before you enter or set up a"Room" then You are live Suggest you run a Dummy room with people you know and see and hear how their broadcast is working adjust the settings if needed?) then go Live Formally
The whole process from connecting to testing to going live shouldn't take you more than a few minutes ...Seconds a typing in the room code if you know the set up

My biggest personal issue is positioning the Webcam securely to avoid "flaring" (Hence I have to do the Selfie test) before launching

The only people which cannot use this are People using Internet Explorer
Though they say the Edge Browser (Window 10 has a Similar protocol called Object RTC) but there are no news on this
Unknown what the situation is on this and B) will it be Cross browser or wall gardened to Windows 10 OS users only?

Jonah Lomu Dies Aged 40

Jonah Lomu, Rugby and indeed New Zealand All Blacks Legend has died aged only 40 years old.

I'm not a follower of Rugby by any means but when this lad was on tour here and on TV then he certainly had my attention.

Full story Mail Online

Today at our local hospital, MrsG had an appointment with a consultant who we have come to know quite well this year. Knowing he's a keen rugby man, in his 40's but still plays, I mentioned the death of Jonah.

The Mail reports he died of a heart attack but consultant said he had heard Jonah may have suffered a blood clot during his journey home from the World Cup here. Maybe, maybe not, but medical folk obviously know their business.

Sad news and at such a young age. He will be sadly missed.

R.I.P Jonah, you were a good 'un.

Why the stiff cover to Web User??????

Opening the current issue of Web User, I was surprised to feel a thick cover and am wondering why. WU has always been the same thickness cover so why now I ask myself. Most people are aware that paper thickness, quality and costs are important, so am I to think this is an error, or is it something that has been introduced for future issues?.

That being so, does this mean that within six months, we will be seeing "due to unforeseen publication costs, we need to raise the price of the magazine"?.

I hope not, because as I see it, it is unnecessary and self inflicted.

Rolled back Win10

After numerous problems since installing Threshold I decided to roll back to the previous version of Windows . I found that the laptop booted up and shut down much more slowly, the task bar jump lists stopped working for no particular reason, and the final thing that pushed me into rolling back was when it first booted up with all the taskbar shortcuts gone. Also the Start Menu would not work so I had no access to any programs!
I rebooted it and after a slow start it all seemed to be OK but after waking up again from sleep mode all the problems were back. This time I could at least still access the Start Menu so I just chose the `roll back to a previous version of Windows' option from Update and Security.
About 15-20mins later the laptop started up with the old version, so far all working OK.

I never thought I would say this but I am seriously considering buying a Mac.

How do I convert to the same format m4a,wma,mp3 on wmp

I have got a Bose wireless music system and am streaming music from my laptop. I am using wmp (either wmp or itunes can be used on a pc). I have got so many duplicate tracks on wmp that I moved Itunes to a flash drive (will still be able to get all the Itunes updates if it is only on a flash drive?) I have still got duplicate tracks on wmp because they are in different formats, wma, m4a, mp3 and I want to convert them to all the same format. The only advice Microsoft can give on duplicate tracks in wmp is to create playlists, which I think is why I have got so many duplicate tracks in wmp's music library. As my wmp seems to include a duplicate of a track from my playlists in the music library. Can I choose which music goes onto wmp?, as I don't want every track that I have in My Music, Amazon Music, One Drive automatically going onto wmp. Phew sorry there are so many questions.

It is anyone's guess...................

With a house move due, I decided to wave goodbye to Talktalk (internet/landline) and selected EE for the same. They told me as I had placed the order in good time, I should expect my landline to be active on move day after 1pm. My router would arrive at my old address before we moved.

To my surprise, in an email from EE, I learned that instead of the 19th hook-up, it would be the 30th.

Then yesterday, email arrived informing me my router would arrive today and I would get an hours warning as I would need to sign for it, despite being told it would be delivered via the letterbox.

More importantly, it would be delivered to my new address, the one we are not due to occupy for another two days.

Options were given to rearrange delivery which I have set up.

But, if I had not seen that second email, ?????

So, it is anyone's guess how this will pan out. I don't use a smart phone so won't be able to access the net till it is resolved, that is unless I sit in town with my ipad, but somehow don't think there will be enough hours in the day for that.

Just think, no phone, no internet. Thank goodness I've got Web User to read, even if I can't action anything.

Did you know that it’s possible to block audio ads on Spotify if you’re running the free version? To do this on the web install adblockplus.org however if you’re on a work machine try i.e. 9 or above. Then go to the cog icon in the top right and select manage add-ons. Next go to tracking protection lists and install ad block rules if not working try the truste list. Then log into Spotify and you can listen to a full album.

On mobile install the disconnect app then run it and open Spotify and there will be no audio ads. On android you will need to slide load the app.

A screen resolution of 1366 x 768 is simply dreadful. 1280 x 800 is little better. It amazes me that back in 2007 you could buy a laptop with a 1920 x 1200 non glare screen but we appear to have been going backwards ever since. Last year I reluctantly stopped using my Dell 1720 and moved to a new machine with a 1920 x 1080 screen. My spreadsheets and wordprocessing and browsing programs miss those extra pixels and using Facebook isn't nearly as easy - especially Facebook games.
Only one of your choices has a decent screen resolution but that one has a dreadful screen size and battery life - I might just as well use my Nexus 7 with a Bluetooth keyboard.
It's high time laptop manufacturers ditched 1366 x 768 screens. I will never buy one and I doubt if those informed enough to read Web User will either.

A waste of money

That's More Like It..

Perfect timing, issue 384 arrived today, 9.45a.m. That's more like it, distribution even better, a day earlier than usual.

Ony read as far as your intro Robert - 'Stop worrying and love Windows 10.' This reads like a good starter for remaining content. Looking forward to it. Thanks.

Secure Money transfer transaction tip for Gmail

This is a good Idea on Gmail , secure too

If you want to pay for something by email On Gmail only There is a feature to securely send or receive money in the same way as you do on secure Public websites

Al you do on the Compose Window (for the UK) is look to the Foot of the Window and in the Centre of the 5 unhighlighted Icons to the Right on The HTML icon (default) there is a Currency Icon ..For the UK its a £ I imagine for Europe (and the Irish Republic) it'll be the Euro Sign here and same goes for the rest.
Click on this and the secure payment page shows
Now, what happens at the other end is unknown. Will there be a invoice "Promissory note" Posted (for their archive)? You tell me:confused:
Until you know what happens to inform the other party the money is in their account or vice versa. ,only do a small value test Transaction to start with(with a safe person)

Slow PC

Hi
My PC seems to have slowed down to some extent, gradually since loading Windows 10. (It used to be Windows 7).
I tried to run FARBAR - but I got "This app can't run on your PC". I've had this on quite a few downloads recently.
It seems to take a long time to connect to the internet (I'm using Firefox). I've got Sky fibre running at 25mbps+.
I've got a SSD but the hard drive seems to make a lot of noise like it's reading/writing a lot. Although it isn't now.
Below is the system summary - can someone advise please?
Thanks.

Don’t know if anyone read the latest comments from the Computer Active Magazine, issue 462 on page 74!

I refer of course to Stuart Andrews’s column under the heading of Mr. Angry.

I nearly always agree with his “Final Straw” comments and often have a chuckle with some of his remarks.

Not having been on any social networking sites, I was just wondering what anyone else thinks about this,

and if they think it’s necessary to have these kinds of buttons to click on?

for the 2nd time! Check your system restore!

Ok I know I have posted about this before but it's happened again!

I have yesterday updated 2 desktops and one laptop to W10 1511/10586.3 (threshold) and in each case after the upgrade system restore was turned off whereas it was on before the upgrade.

So if you like to have system Restore running please do check to make sure yours has not been set to off too. :)

microsoft word 2010 cannot be opened try again or repair the product in control panel

I didn't have a problem doing the repair. That was successful. I notice after I rebooted the computer and click on a MS Word icon for the first time it takes up to 1 min. for Word to open. Opening a file under MS Word after the first time the software is invoked it runs just fine!

What's up with that?!

Thanks!

Can I use a television as a monitor?

I have just purchased a Sony flatscreen 31 inch telly for 50 quid. It is only about two years old. Can I use this as a monitor? If so is it an HDMI cable to laptop set up? Laptop is an AsusX series.

I recall when I set up my old "GNR", 21 inch monitor (still using) from the laptop, there were problems getting the picture to fit the monitor and eventually did, but with loss of picture definition. Not a problem on 21 inch but will it be noticeable on a 31 inch screen if it will fit at all?

Any of you tech types got an answer please?

E mail notifier info please.

Running Win10 with latest Firefox. -- Does anyone have info or a FFox add on that will pop up when new email has arrived. I mainly use Sky/Yoohoo mail and have just set up gmail for my tablet which I think I can sync with my lappy.

I have never understood fully how you connect all the e mails together and the terms POP, etc, etc. Would probably be a good one for an article and workshop in WUser for some of us.

The clock is ticking for Older versions of Windows OS

Hi, This is a BT link which I thought might interest those of you who are still ticking along nicely with XP and Vista. If you are not sure of the dates when Microsoft backup ends this will help. It seems a long way until June is it but amazing how fast time flies.

http://ift.tt/1PIhUkQ

I intended to wait, but bit the bullet recently and so far have only had one real problem and that was I couldn't download Firefox as my browser, but sorted it eventually. Being on this forum and reading WU and /or CA is a great back up if you eventually decide on Win 10.

Portable Hard Drive

Hi,
My daughter has a seagate 1d6ap6-500, and she has tried to access photos on this.

The PC (Dell & W7) fails to recognise it, and so does a Mac...

My first (and all subsequent) thoughts are that it has died...

On plugging it in, it makes a low rapid beeping noise, then the blue light just flashes.

I did wonder if Linux would recognise it, but having tried the Mac, I have my doubts.

So.... clutching at straws, is there ANYthing I could try, or specialist companies?

(and yes I have told her time and again to keep photos on more than one location)

I'm quite annoyed as it's reasonably new (3 years old) and has only had light use. It never goes out of the house, and is not just "dumped in a drawer".

Thanks

Windows 10 Upgrade

Just got round to reading the latest Computer Active. In the letters page a reader warns, "Hands off Microsoft, you don't own my PC."

He's accusing MS trying to trick everyone into installing W10 by putting it into the Optional updates. When his PC asked to update and restart a check was made for what updates were pending. All the important updates were unchecked but but one of the optional's was - the upgrade to W10.

Checking mine, sure enough it was the same. Unticked it and changed my settings on W7 for the future. I'll decide if and when.

Thought it worth a mention here.

Can you remove unwanted Win 10 downloads?r

Rogerman,

You say in another post:-

"However, for all the hype over this upgrade I haven`t really noticed any major changes to the OS at all. Two newly installed apps I did not want have already been uninstalled. Hey - ho."

If Microsoft auto download Win10 to my computer, and, as you say, you have now got stuff you don't want or need, can I dump it or remove the upgrade command that brought the rubbish. Is there anyway to do this or do you have to except it whatever?

Tornado,
~In your Win 10 updates post, the link states the following:-

Important - If you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall this update. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this update. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.

1. Does this mean any language pack with any software?
2. Does it mean that in the future if you load any language pack you have re-instate this update?

Bye Hudl2

Well I read that Hudl 2 production is no more and you can no longer get them from Tesco.
Shame as I liked this tablet, it covered all my needs and I have learned a lot of the workings of Android via it.

I expect that it will be destined in a short time to the electronics waste bin in my attic as I'm sure no updates will be sent through. Thank God it didn't cost me a lot. You win some, you lose some.

Seems to me that Tesco are cutting back on a lot of products, no doubt due to their rubbish financial situation.

I saw this on another VBB site Im on and thought I would share with you guys.......

1. Click on the Start Menu icon and type regedit.
2. After you've done that, please go to the following directory: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ImmersiveShell
3. Once you are there, please go to Edit → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value
4. Now name the value that you created UseWin32TrayClockExperience.

Beware scams in the wake of the App Store slip-up

Beware scams in the wake of the App Store slip-up

Correct me if Im wrong here Please

Its all about backing up the operating system in windows ten.
Been looking into the Macrium Reflect software and yes it does look good and easy to use.

My question is.When we do a backup of the C drive using reflect,We make the backup to an external HDD then we must make a recovery disc.
Then on the occasion the pc goes wrong we have to insert the recovery disc in the drive then find out what key to press on the keyboard then select the boot point then find the destination of the backup made on an external drive then it all fires up and away it all goes.
Windows running again,Well done.

Now I have been looking at the other option of the clone system,If I decide to get two SSD drives big enough to accommodate the operating sytem.
Call the first disc A then call the second one B.
Now make a clone of the C drive on the A drive and also make a clone on the B drive to be on the safe side.
Make sure that you keep those two in a secure place incase of a problem with the C drive.

If the C drive goes caput you just remove the existing drive and fit the drive A and bob's u'r uncle the pc is up and running,Now we have a drive B that is good and a bad C drive.Format the bad drive ready to use as another A drive again just incase.
The only point is how often should one make a copy of your C drive ??.Looking at my thoughts would that be a far quicker method to get the pc back to up and running rather that looking for the recovery disc and working out what key to tap on the keyboard.

I would like to know some of your feelings on this Please,Maybe I'm wrong in thinking that way.
It was a brain wave that I had the other night while laying there waiting for shut eye.

Many Thanks.Looking forward to hear you thoughts.:)

Why can't I unmute my microphone?

I have a microphone plugged into the rear jack of my (Vista) computer and when I look at its Properties there is a tick against it that tells me it is working properly – but I cannot record my voice. When I click on ‘Levels’ in the Properties tab on the Microphone I can see the sound is muted. I unmute it but cannot click on ‘Apply’ because it is greyed out – my only options are OK or Cancel.

If I click on OK, I can record for a short while, but when I try to go into, say. Skype to record I find that this will not work and when I look at the Microphone Properties again, the Mute has returned. Is there anything I can I do to permanently unmute it?

BT NetProtect Plus

Thanks to Madeline posting advice in another thread I stumbled across something else in the link to BT. Never known BT to give too much away and was surprised to discover free anti virus program is available to broadband customers. 'BT NetProtect Plus powered by McAfee® security will keep your computer and confidential data safe from nasty viruses and spyware.'

Soon my Kaspersky av will expire on the Windows 7 pc. The laptop,(W10), came recently with 12months of McAfee protection on board. Kas renewal will cost me at least £20. McAfee, don't intend paying for it but it can run until trial ends.

Has anyone taken advantage of BT's free Net Protect Plus? Does it compare favourably with Avast for instance?

Any advice appreciated.

Is detail/quality lost on transferring music to another format

I am thinking of transferring all of my music on computer to another hard-drive to use as the main source, so as to free up space on my desktop computer. I am wondering if this might mean a loss of quality, especially if this is done more than once, so as to create another backup after this is done? Thank you

Advanced Search task Feature on Yahoomail only

If you have the old YahooMail UI, you cannot see this.
You need the Glossy Version OK?

I have several email boxes and they Generally look and Act the same including the Smartmail Generation on this basic task
The object is to simply tell the Email server to collate and display related posts

Cut a long story short you often end up playing Twister on the layout and you have to be well versed in the mechanics of the Client. For instance Gmalis protocol is make up a reserved keyword in the search box then add your query No other way and its dead slow and takes an attempt or 2 ...And that is one of the better working procedures!!

So whats different in Yahoo's Mail box?
First up there is a manual search box Like the rest (wait a second) Yahoo have aced this, works best when the mailbox gets busy and you have mail coming in fast such as an RSS feed notification
Method:(and its very fast!)

Open the mailbox up Pick any posting bar a post with a sub-posting which is denoted with a white ">"

Next hover over the mouse pointer over the Target post
What shows is 3 small icons on the line,a spyglass,Trash bin and Star to highlight that post..

Now here is the Magic pull the pointer over the senders name for their email address(good for detecting Phishing ) without opening the post, and 2,Move the pointer onto the spyglass icon which displays the legend " search for messages from this sender" Click it, I won't spoil what comes next but it it shows off how good a job has Yahoo done on this feature (even I have not explored beyond this point)
Also seen if you do a few different Searches on the Session the Client makes up Mini windows OK?
Another feature that works for me is the News feed Tool icon(Unique?) adjacent to the Yahoo "Messenger" Smiley face icon

Android files not showing in pc on ver 6 heres how to fix!

Posted this in case it is of help to anyone with this problem

Upgrade your android device from version 5 to the new version 6?
Plug your USB/android cable to explorer and you won't see any files.

Android up to version 5 you run the USB/nexus cable to a USB port on your PC and File explorer instantly finds all the files on the Nexus and displays them.

Android is now updating to version 6 and if you do the same as above you will not see any files at all, what you have to do is swipe down on the nexus charging logo and select USB for file transfer, then the files will appear!

Not only that but you have to do this every time you connect the device to a computer. Seems a pointless and backward step to me, furthermore it's not an obvious thing to do and no indication that you need to do this to see your files!
