Bootup failure

My PC with Windows7 Ultimate had been taking up to 15mins to boot up. After reading a suggestion in Web User I decided to go into msconfig to perform a diagnostic boot up. When I rebooted my PC to start this function it froze after the windows logo appeared and has done so ever since. I have now attempted to carry out a System Restore using Windows 7 Repair disc. Two restore points were listed following critical updates (about 30mins. apart).I tried both restore points but the process could not be completed and no changes were made. The reason given was that System Restore failed to extract
C:\SlimDrivers_TSA274Q0X\slimdrivers(1).exe from the restore point.
One idea I have had is to install the hard drive from this PC as a second hard drive into another PC with Windows 7, then searching for, and hopefully deleting the above file. Would System Restore then work? I would welcome any suggestion.
