How to build a roster (WWE)

In light of the wwe releases, I got to thinking about how to build a stacked roster in the WWE. Feel free to disagree or add on.

1. Know. Your. System.

This is like changing coordinators/schemes/philosophies every off season. The WWE wants to have something for every demographic, it doesn't work. You end up with Cena tagging with the Shield and if it happens long enough Dean Ambrose turns into Cena Jr. It happened to Sheamus, I saw it beginning to happen to the USO's. You can't have Vince's guys, and HHH's guys. Cena is the living personification of why this does not work.

2. Take the best talent available. Always upgrade talent.

If you don't, Cena stays in the main event and never changes and has 16 title reigns. And when it comes time to take a break from the main event and move down the card, you have no one to move up in his place and no one for Cena to feud with, when he moves down. So he runs through guys that already have bad gimmicks and that just compounds the issue. A bad gimmick and getting fed to Cena. Finishes aside, Cena-Wyatt worked for 3+ months because Wyatt is a true elite talent not because Cena "elevated" him. If Bray Wyatt beat Cena and then moved onto main event then I'd be more inclined to believe Cena "elevated" him.

3. Do not create gimmicks / choose talent based on where they'd fit on the card.

You don't reach on guys who aren't going to work in the long run and who you'll have to replace in a year. Leo Kruger could have been the next Jake the Snake Roberts. Adam Rose while good for a laugh is a classic - "we need a midcard comedy guy to bring the crowd down after that great match at the top of the hour". Adam Rose is a reach and he'll never force his way into the mainevent. MidCard lifers are not good for business. Maybe in the days of territories but not now. You can't build a roster on dispensable talent.

4. develop talent

knowing your system, taking the best talent available, puts you in a much better position to identify and develop talent leading to a robust and strong roster top to bottom. It makes me wonder who's in charge when the Shield and Wyatts come out of NXT but so does a character like Adam Rose. I still like NXT and I hope with HHH in charge it will continue to prove its worth in the long run. I think it will. And I think it was the smartest investment WWE has made in a long, long time.
