The Death Of Wolverine

Probably the biggest story in the world of comic books, considering the mainstream attention it's garnered since it was announced earlier this year, is Marvel killing off Wolverine. With the possible exception of Spider-Man, Wolverine is arguably the most popular and, due in part to the various X-Men films and animated series over the past 20 years, recognizable character on their roster.

In a nutshell, the story arc that's been going on over the course of much of the past year or so revolves around Wolverine losing his mutant healing factor and the consequences surrounding it. His healing powers are essentially turned off due to an infection of a sentient virus from Marvel's Microverse, though the virus is purged but the cost is his healing factor being shut off with none of the big brains of Marvel's universe, including Mister Fantastic, knowing how to turn it back on. Since he's no longer immortal, for all intents and purposes, has so many enemies and is such an active fighter, the consequences are obvious.

In this case, there's no big surprise that the character's gonna die, obviously since Marvel has already said so. Whether or not it takes away from the event by not delivering a big surprise, the questions I have regarding the whole thing are:

1. How long will he stay dead?

2. How will he be brought back?

Anyone that's ever read when or heard about any significant comic book character dying over the past 20 or so years knows that death is never permanent. When Superman died in 1993, it pretty much shocked the world and pissed off people worldwide, even if they had never read a comic book in their lives. Of course, unbeknownst to most people at the time, Superman didn't stay dead nor was there ever any intention of him staying dead. Just like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and a few others, the Wolverine character is a friggin' cash cow for Marvel and has been for the past few decades. Cash cow characters never say dead and his popularity and profitability is why he's a starring character in half a dozen or so titles each month.

As for how long the character stays dead, I'm guessing it'll be about a year, two at the very most but I'll be surprised if he's gone for anywhere close to two years.

As for how he's brought back, I'm thinking of a couple of different ways. In one way, which I think could result in an absolute clusterfuck, would involve somehow altering time so that either his death doesn't happen somehow or that he's not infected with the virus that shut off his healing factor. Another way could involve the use of magic somehow to bring him back and restore his healing factor.
